This Webpage is designed to help teachers access lesson plans with an international focus in the Ohio Department of Education Instructional Management System (IMS.) Organized by continent, educators can easily access lesson plans aligned to Ohio’s Academic Content Standards.

Foreign Language Advisory Council Recommendations

Foreign Language Advisory Council (FLAC) members were selected by the State Board of Education and charged by the legislature to develop a strategic plan to improve foreign language learning in Ohio. This document details their findings and recommendations.

Columbus Council on World Affairs

The Columbus Council on World Affairs sponsors a variety of events initiatives designed to promote international awareness and understanding in Central Ohio. This includes a number of programs aimed at cultivating knowledge and leadership among students, such as the International Educator of the Year Award, “Council Fellows” program, a camp-like global issues retreat, and a “life swap” program involving native Ohio students and students from Somali immigrant families.

 

Cleveland Council on World Affairs

The Cleveland Council on World Affairs promotes understanding and engagement in international affairs in the Greater Cleveland region. In addition to hosting a variety of public events for adults featuring scholars and world leaders, the CCWA sponsors programs for students such as the Model United Nations program and provides a variety of links and online educational resources for use in the classroom.

 

Gerald H. Read Center for International and Intercultural Education at Kent State University

This unique center is housed within the College and Graduate School of Education, Health, and Human Resources at Kent State University. This site provides information about the initiatives of the Center, including professional development opportunities for educators. Kent State University is also a credit-granting institution for International Baccalaureate program workshops.

 

Global Center of Greater Cincinnati

The Global Center of Greater Cincinnati connects Cincinnati’s International Visitors Council and the World Affairs Council of Cincinnati. In addition to providing information about the Global Center and upcoming international-focused events in Greater Cincinnati, this site provides details about numerous educational programs for students and teachers, including the Junior World Affairs Council, the “Great Decisions” series, Model APEC, and Academic World Quest.

 

International Democratic Education Institute at Bowling Green State University

The mission of the IDEI is to promote democracy and civic engagement around the world through education. Resources available from IDEI include lesson plans to help students learn about democracy, civil society, and tolerance. The site also provides information about civic education projects involving collaborations between IDEI partners from Ohio and abroad.

 

International Education Outreach at The Ohio State University

The Office of International Affairs oversees many programs at The Ohio State University including the Study Abroad program, International Student and Scholar services, the Mershon Center for International Security Studies and five Area Studies Centers. It sponsors international education outreach programs and special events. Resources focus on language, culture, and current economic, political and social events. K-12 educators can take advantage of a host of education and learning resources: professional development workshops; study abroad opportunities; free loan libraries of videos, cultural boxes, and photo exhibits; and a speakers' bureau.

 

International Education Week Resources from the University System of Ohio

This new Web page hosted by the University System of Ohio promotes involvement in International Education Week activities, and provides ideas for colleges and universities, educators, and other citizens of Ohio.

 

International Trade Division – Ohio Department of Development

The International Trade Division promotes the export of “Made in Ohio” goods and services, supports Ohio companies in expanding international trade, and encourages foreign investment to help create jobs and promote economic growth. The ITD site provides resources and program information for business leaders as well as data on foreign trade and investment of interest to all Ohioans.

 

K-12 Chinese Flagship Program at The Ohio State University

The K-12 Chinese Flagship Program develops curriculum, provides teacher training, and creates technology-based resources to support the teaching of Mandarin Chinese. This site provides information about resources for teachers and school leaders, distance learning programs, and community outreach programs to involve heritage Chinese speakers in language education.

InternationalEd.org

InternationalEd.org provides a wide variety of resources to help educators “put the world into world-class education.” In addition to information for classroom teacher, this site provides access to a variety of research and policy resources related to international education, foreign language education, and preparing America’s youth to compete in a global marketplace.

 

Longview Foundation for Education in World Affairs and International Understanding

The Longview Foundation provides support and leadership for international education initiatives around the U.S. This site provides links to innovative programs sponsored by the Longview Foundation. The Longview Foundation has supported international education in Ohio by providing financial support for the International Education Advisory Committee, sponsoring international education events including the first Ohio International Summit for Education, and providing funding for the Ohio Department of Education and iEARN-USA to pilot online international collaborative learning projects in Ohio schools.

 

Official U.S. Government International Education Week Site

This is the official site of International Education Week sponsored jointly by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. This resource includes ideas and free promotional materials for promoting international learning in schools, as well as statements on the importance of international education from the President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.

 

Peace Corps Coverdell WorldWise Schools

The Coverdell WorldWise Schools program site, hosted by the Peace Corps, offers lesson plans to help teachers integrate international content into their classrooms. The site also helps teachers connect with past and present Peace Corps volunteers around the world willing to share their first hand experiences international experiences with students.

 

AskAsia.org

Askasia.org is an educational site maintained by the Asia Society that provides a variety of resources for teaching and learning about the history and culture of Asian countries and current issues and events impacting Asian and American youth.

 

Teachers’ Guide to Online International Collaborative Projects

This site, developed by the U.S. Department of Education, provides resources on international collaborative learning using the Internet. Sample projects, planning resources, and links to organizations that facilitate international collaboration between students are provided.

 

iEARN-USA

iEARN-USA, the American affiliate of the International Education and Resource Network, facilitates communication and collaboration between teachers and students around the world, primarily through Web-based projects. The Ohio Department of Education and several partner districts around the state are piloting iEARN-based projects this year with support from the Longview Foundation.
